On Sunday 30 November 2025, we will be running a fundraising tour  in support of the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA), co-organised with the Oxford University Sudanese Society (OUSS). Read below a short article by Maab Amin, OUSS co-president, to understand the background of the war in Sudan and why we are supporting this fundraising effort.

Understanding the War in Sudan

Since April 2023, the war in Sudan has unleashed a long and devastating humanitarian crisis. Millions of people have been displaced, thousands killed, and entire cities destroyed. The conflict, fueled by militias supported and financed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has torn apart communities and targeted civilians in a violent struggle for control over Sudan’s rich resources and strategic location.

A Call for Global Solidarity

As members of the Sudanese diaspora, we continue to resist in every way possible — by speaking out, organising, and reminding the world that Sudan’s suffering must not be ignored. The collaboration between the Oxford University Sudanese Society and Uncomfortable Oxford is part of this ongoing effort to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with our people.

The Crisis in El-Fashir

This initiative comes at a particularly painful moment. In October 2025, the city of El-Fashir in western Sudan fell under the control of these militias. Reports describe mass atrocities, ethnic cleansing, and what many describe as acts of genocide. Access to the region remains nearly impossible, making it difficult to document the full scale of the violence and the exact number of victims. Thousands of survivors have fled to nearby areas such as Tawila, where they face severe shortages of food, shelter, and medical care.

Oxford’s Sudanese Community Reponse

In response to this escalating crisis, the Sudanese community in Oxford decided to take action. Together with Uncomfortable Oxford, we are organising a charity walking tour — using storytelling and local history as tools of awareness solidarity.

All proceeds from this Oxford charity tour will directly support displaced families from El-Fashir through the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA). Your contribution will help provide essential emergency nutrition, shelter, and healthcare ot those most affected by the conflict.

Why Partner with Uncomfortable Oxford?

We chose to collaborate with Uncomfortable Oxford because of their consistent commitment to exploring difficult histories and amplifying voices that are often unheard. Their tours remind us that the inequalities we see today are rooted in the past—a past that connects cities like Oxford to global realities, including those shaping the conflict in Sudan. This partnership reflects a shared belief that confronting uncomfortable truths is the first step toward building a more just and compassionate world.

A Fundraising Event for Sudan: Walking as Solidarity

This event is more than a fundraising event; it is a space for rememberance, education, and action. As we walk through Oxford’s streets, we connect Sudan’s present struggle with global conversations about history, justice, and collective responsibility.

In times like these, solidarity becomes more than a moral stance; it becomes a lifeline. Through this initiative, we hope to remind everyone that what happens in Sudan is not distant or disconnected. Our struggles, histories, and hopes are intertwined. Every step we take together through the streets of Oxford and beyond is a step toward justice, dignity, and peace.

Join our Fundraising Tour in support of Sudan on Sunday 30 November at 1PM. All proceeds from the tour will be donated to SAPA, to support nutrition and healthcare programs in Sudan and to support displaced families from El-Fashir.
