SUMMARY:Wonder Wander 2026 - Fundraiser Tour: History of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:What does medical progress really mean?\nWho gets to benefit from it — and who gets left behind?\nAnd what happens when saving lives comes at an ethical cost? \nDonate to join this Wonder Wander 2026 fundraising tour in support of Thoughtful\, UK’s longest-running charity dedicated to philosophy for children and communities. This tour on the history of medicine in Oxford will be accompanied by a philosopher from the Uehiro Oxford Institute\, Dr Jonathan Pugh\, who will be raising additional questions pertaining to research ethics\, public health ethics and open the tour to wider conversations about practical ethics. \nDate & Details\n\n📅 Date: Friday 25 September \n⏰ Time: 5:30 PM (90 mins in length) \n📍 Meeting Point: Meet under the Bridge of Sighs (Hertford Bridge)\, OX1 3BL \n\n⚠️ Booking Essential: Advance booking is required\, each ticket helps fund the activities of Thoughtful. \nDonate to Join \nAbout Thoughtful\nSince 1992\, Thoughtful (formerly SAPERE) has trained teachers and worked directly with young people to build the confidence to think for themselves\, and with others. They focus resources where they’re needed most\, working with socio-economically and educationally disadvantaged learners to make philosophical enquiry more equitable. From classrooms to communities\, they help people think deeply\, communicate clearly and treat one another with care. \nWonder Wander is Thoughtful’s annual walking-and-talking fundraiser. Each year they take philosophical enquiry into new communities and raise money to fund the classes\, teacher training and resources that keep P4C growing across the UK. Past Wonder Wanders have funded after-school philosophy clubs and sessions for care-experienced young people. \nDonations ensure that Thoughtful can keep reaching new schools\, developing new opportunities and sharing what happens when people are given the space to think together. Every gift helps make philosophical enquiry possible. \nThe price of your ticket is a donation to Thoughtful\, funding core work to bring philosophical enquiry to more people and places. \nDonations start at £10 per ticket. \nDonate to Join \nAbout the Tour:\nDissect the long history of medical research and practice in Oxford. The history of medicine is always a bit uncomfortable. This tour walks you through medical history in the city from medieval plagues and the founding of the medical school\, to the first trials of penicillin. Far from a straightforward linear progression\, Oxford’s medical history is a complicated conversation about health equity\, medical ethics\, and continued clashes over the control of the body. Using the built environment\, we examine health geographies\, resistance to public health policies\, and the tensions inherent in medical progress. \nTour recommended for ages 12 and older. \nACCESSIBLITY: \n\nAll tours are wheelchair accessible\, but please note some mildly uneven pavement and crowding in the city centre\, especially on weekends.\nService animals are welcome on all tours.\nCarers and accessibility aids are welcome to attend free of charge and do not need to register.\nThe total distance walked during each tour is less than one mile. Each tour includes moments for sitting/leaning against walls\, and toilets are available at certain points along the routes.\n\nWe do not usually use amplifying audio equipment but can arrange to do this upon request and with advance notice. Please inform your guide if any visual or hearing accommodations required\, and they will keep this in mind throughout the tour. All our guides receive accessibility training and are prepared to make accommodations as needed. \n\nBack to all Uncomfortable Oxford tours\nBack to Uncomfortable Oxford homepage

SUMMARY:(Un)Natural History Museum Tour
DESCRIPTION:Pay What You Decide to join this tour in support of the Oxford Ideas Festival. \nJoin us for a unique tour of the Natural History Museum in Oxford. The term ‘Natural History’ might lead us to believe that the collections and research at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History are scientifically objective and culturally removed. This museum tour will challenge your understanding of science and scientific knowledge as we walk you through the main exhibits on a unique guided tour. The museum hosts a number of natural specimens gathered from a variety of contexts and preserved with a specific purpose. \nOn this tour\, your guide will question the way we understand nature\, highlighting unseen biases and the influence of human perspectives on collecting practice and display. By flipping the lens from a ‘natural’ approach to an ‘unnatural’ construction\, we explore the historical and ideological underpinnings of natural history museums\, revealing a narrative shaped by human influence\, social norms\, and selective choice. \nMeet your guide outside the main entrance to the museum. \nPlease note that the tour length sometimes runs over depending on group engagement. This tour was developed in collaboration with curators and staff at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. \nBOOKING OPENS – Thursday 21 August 2025 \nBOOK HERE\n\n\n\nThis tour is offered as part of IF Oxford Festival of Science and Ideas 2025\, an independent UK charity (Charity number 1151361) that works with hundreds of organisations and groups to capture interest in ‘science and ideas’ topics through educational projects and its quality annual Festival in October. \nIF Oxford uses Pay What You Decide (PWYD) ticketing\, which means you can choose to pay whatever you want — or can afford. \nIF Oxford is run by The Oxfordshire Science Festival (charity #1151361)\, and your donation may be eligible for Gift Aid\, allowing the charity to claim an extra 25% of your donation at no extra cost to you. Gift Aid forms can be downloaded from www.if-oxford.com/donate.The Festival reserves the right to modify event formats and manage audience attendance in line with our Attendance Policy. \nAge Restrictions: Attendees under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. \n  \n\n\n\nACCESSIBLITY: \n\nThe museum is wheelchair accessible\, but please note some crowding when busy.\nWorking service animals are welcome inside the museum.\nCaregivers and accessibility aids are welcome to attend tours for free\, with no need to register. We ask that they let us know in advance.\nToilets are available at the museum\, as well as storage lockers.\n\nWe cannot use amplifying audio equipment inside the museum\, but please inform your guide if any visual or hearing accommodations are required and they will keep this in mind throughout the tour.
